jane eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. after we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, jane eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:

we remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.

we remember her pursuit of justice. it’s like a companion with the goodness. but still, a virtuous person should promote the goodness on one side and must check the badness on the other side.

we remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. in her opinion, everyone is the same at the god’s feet. though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality.

we also remember her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence…

when we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.

her story makes us thinking about life and we learn much from her experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real beauty.

the tale of two cities is a historical story, one of dickenssquo; long fictions。the background to the novel is the revolution of france 。it portrayed a brutal and bloody story , but it also contained love and friendship。

in the novel, dickens sarcastically described a typical cruel nobleman—marquis of evermonde 。 when he was young he and his brother stole a countrywoman by force and killed her family 。whatsquo;s worse , he used his power to imprison dr manette , a kind and honest man who knew all the things they had done and wanted to disclose their crimes 。 in order to hide their crimes。 marquis of evermonde and his brother threw doctor manette into prison for 18 years 。 during these 18 years, doctor manette lost his freedom and suffer a great in spirit 。

i felt unthinkable that marquis of evermonde and his brother killed people just as easily as they killed chickens。 they deprived other peoplesquo;s freedom as they liked and they thought it was normal and unremarkable。 they had never realized that they had done something wrong or something improper。 because their nature was cruel and evil, like demons。 there is an old saying which means: people who mit too many crimes will kill themselves。 after all, there is justice in the world。 the demons cansquo;t be rampant forever。 because the world will not forgive them。 they will pay their lives for their crimes。 letsquo;s see the consequence of the marquis, squo;squo;he lay there like a stone with a knife pushed into his heart。 i think it was just what he ought to gain and it is a real exciting scene。

the marquissquo; death was just the beginning of peoplesquo;s resistance to the nobleman。 gradually more and more people joined in the revolution。 one after another nobleman were sentenced to death and their heads were cut down 。 however, some innocent people were implicated in the revolution。 charles darney was one of them he was the nephew of marquis of evermonde。 to the opposite of his uncle, darney was a kind and independent young man。

dickens spoke highly of kindness mercy and love in the novel too。 this is the other thone of the novel when doctor manette was released from prison。 it was his daughter lucie who took care of him and helped him return to normal。 during this time, dr manette and lucie knew charles darney and sydeny carton, the two young man fell in love with lucie at the same time 。 at last, lucie married chares darney 。dr manette accepted darney as his son-in-law although he knew that darney was the nephew of the man who threw him into prison for18 years。 this is the love between father and daughter。 and sydeny carton , the very great man ,loved lucie deeply。 he promised lucie that he would do everything for her happiness。 he did it truely ,he sacrificed himself instead of darney who looked the same as him。 this is love for lovers 。 this is the most wonderful thing in the world。 it also reminds us that no matter how no matter when there is true love existing。 at the end , lucie, dr manette and darney arrived in england safely。

the tale of two cities is different from other historical fictions。 its characters and main plots are fictional under the real background of the revolution of france。 the author made the experience of the fictional charactor dr manette as the main clue。the plots are plicated, and they are flexuous and dramatic。 the structure is plete and rigorous。

dickens had dear love and hate。 he praised those who ought to be praised and attacked those who ought to be attacked。 the motivation of the novel maybe just warn the english dominators。 but i think we can learn something meaningful from the tale of two cities。

the old man and the sea was written by an american writer named ernest hemingway. it has been translated into tens of languages, and the writer was so proud of his work.

santiago, the hero of the story, had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish back. at first, a boy named manolion had been with him, but santiago couldn’t catch even one fish. the boy had gone at his parents’ orders in a lucky boat which caught three good fish the first week, and the couple thought that it was definitely and finally bad to let their boy stay with the old fisherman. on santiago’s eighty-fifth day of fishing, he went out alone, leaving the smell of the land behind and rowing out into the clean early morning smell of ocean. to his surprise, he caught a tuna which he had never seen before and it was hard to believe that the tuna was bigger than his boat. later, the blood from the tuna left a trail for all sharks as wide as a highway, so fighting against sharks was unavoidable. the result was that sharks ate up all the meat of the tuna and santiago only brought the tuna skeleton back. he was so tired that he slept deeply as soon as he got home, dreaming of lions.

in this story, santiago was an old and poor widow though he was good at fishing and had so much valuable experience. he only lived on fishing all his life. at long last, he just brought the skeleton back, you may think such a fisherman should be a loser, but this result didn’t mean failing. on the contrary, hemingway used the skeleton which was the pillar of spirit to strengthen the meaning of the old man’s life. santiago was described as a perfect person who never gave up.

the boy named manolion appeared in the beginning and at the end. even during santiago’s voyage, he always came to the poor old man’s mind. he was the only person who cared santiago sincerely, trust santiago absolutely, and the young boy wanted to be an inheritor of santiago’s career. hemingway not only told us the experience of fishing should be spread from generation to generation, but also expected us to admire, to learn from and to carry on the spirit of santiago. the appearance of manilion was not by chance, which was arranged by hemingway. during santiago’s long voyage, how much he wished the boy could have been with him to drive his loneliness away. youth is the symbol of energy and hope. even an old man can be young inside. lions appeared several times in santiago’s dreams for they were living in his heart, which showed the spirit of santiago would never be low.

the coming of the sharks could not be avoided. they can be thought as attack which can swallow your success and happiness. the story tells me to face the problems happened in my life with a heart as wide as ocean. though the old man was lonely, he was a traveler who walked on the road of realizing his ideals. but he was not alone at the moment, for his will was so firm. the old man and the sea has won the nobel prize at last, which is a comfort to the writer.

class one student no.10 name: anna wang great expectation was written by charles dickens (1812-1870), one of the most popular writers of all the time, who created some of the best-known characters in english literature. great expectation is similar to david copperfield in that it is the story of a boy growing up.

pip has lost his parents when he was fifteen years old. he was brought up by his sister and her husband--joe gargery, a blacksmith who takes pip on as an apprentice, teaches him his trade and makes friends with him. one day before christmas, when pip went to the churchyard where his parents were buried, he met an escaping convict-- abel magwitch. pip brought cakes for the hungry man, which touched abel deeply, although he was caught by police. after the christmas, pip was invited to play with estella, a beautiful girl adopted by miss havisham. miss havisham was the richest man in the village. but she was very strange. she was dressed a bridal veil all the whole life after her fiancé left her at the wedding day, taking her a large amount of property. so she lived in the revenge and hated all the men. she treated estella as a tool to take revenge on all man. when pip met estella, he loved her, so did estella. but estella knew she was just a tool to carry out the revenge plan of miss havisham, so she pretended to be proud, indifferent and look down upon pip- a relative of a poor blacksmith, which broke pip’s heart. as a consequence, pip was determined to become a real gentleman who is in possession of money, good manners, luxurious life and a great expectation for estella’s sake. under the help of a stranger who donated a lot of money to him, pip left joe and the village, and went to london to live a luxurious life to learn to how to become a real gentleman. pip started to waste money, look down upon other poor people, even including joe, his brother-in-law and best friend! gradually, pip lost himself in the whirlpool of money, although he has had a large number of debts. as the same time, estella has become more and more beautiful, graceful and brilliant. she walked in the crowd of men and married one of them as the miss havisham’s wish, which really tore pip into pieces. and, as the same time, the mysterious benefactor of pip came out. he is abel- the escaping convict whom pip has helped. when he escaped from the prison again, he earned much money and wanted to pay back pip in that way. but abel soon was caught by police and died. the properties he gave to pip

also were confiscated by police. pip fell from the heaven to hell. he couldn’t stand it. as a result, he had a serious ill.

after receiving a letter describing the bad situation of pip, joe came to london to look after pip in spite of the bad attitude pip ever towards him. after recovering, pip realized his wrong. he decided to be a gentleman by his own endeavor. so he came back to the small village and spared no efforts to make business with his friend--herbert. several years later, pip met estella again at the old house of miss havisham. after knowing her husband has died and the real reason why estella didn’t choose him before, pip made a proposal to her. at last, the two lovers were in together and pip found his real great expectation at the end.

when i finished reading the novel, i also take consideration to the question “what a real great expectation is?” in my opinion, great expectation not means money, luxurious life provided by others, even the benefactors are your parents. it is our own dreams that we want to realize by our own efforts. great expectation may be the further study, a respectable degree, a good job, a warm family or something else. but we must know that our future and great expectation must be mastered by our own. we should working for them, fighting for them, even dying for them, whatever. only when we got what we want by our own endeavor, can we say we have had a great expectation.

after reading robinson crusoe, i am shocked at it, and i really admire robinson.

i admire his spirit of not retreating when being in trouble. he lived in an uninhabited island for about 26 years and encountered many difficulties which are beyond our imagination. he survives on his perseverance and faith; what"s more, he created the new life. his spirit is worth learning, which is that we can"t surpass.

i still more admire his ability of bearing loneliness. from my point of view, all of us are survive in the society without families and friends. if i were robinson, i should rely on myself to survive but i couldn"t bear the isolated life. now we may not aware how important the emotion is. however, if we encounter that condition like robinson"s, we may know that we are not individuals, and we can"t live alone in the world. kinship, friendship and love are indispensable in our life, and they are priceless treasure which are worth maintaining by our life.

the novel opens with the famous line, "it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."。 and ends with two marriages: jane and bingley#39;s, as well as darcy and elizabeth#39;s. both couples are assumed to live happily ever after.

elizabeth (lizzy) bennet is the core of the family. elizabeth is the second of mr. and mrs. bennet#39;s five daughters, and is an intelligent, bold, attractive twenty-year-old when the story begins. in addition to being her father#39;s favourite, elizabeth is characterized as a sensible, yet stubborn, woman. misled by his cold outward behaviour, elizabeth originally holds mr. darcy in contempt. however, she finds that mr. darcy improves on acquaintance, more so than she would expect.

fitzwilliam darcy (commonly known as mr. darcy) is the central male character and elizabeth#39;s second love interest in the novel. he is an intelligent, wealthy, extremely handsome and reserved 28-year-old man, who often appears haughty or proud to strangers but possesses an honest and kind nature underneath. initially, he considers elizabeth his social inferior, unworthy of his attention, but he finds that, despite his inclinations, he cannot deny his feelings for elizabeth. his initial proposal of marriage is rejected because of his pride and elizabeth#39;s prejudice against him; however, at the end of the novel, after their relationship has blossomed, he is happily engaged to a loving elizabeth.

role of women in the 18th century

in late-18th-century england, women were relegated to secondary roles in society with respect to property and social responsibilities. for example, women were not permitted to visit new arrivals to the neighbourhood (such as mr. bingley in pride and prejudice) until the male head of their household had first done so. women were under enormous pressure to marry for the purpose of securing their financial futures and making valuable social connections for their families. therefore, marriage, though romanticised, was in many ways a financial transaction and social alliance rather than a matter of love. although jane austen did not condone loveless marriages (she stayed single all her life), she did approve of matches having equality in various respects, including wealth, social status, love and character. in pride and prejudice, wealth, social status, chastity (and the perception of chastity) and physical attractiveness are depicted as factors affecting a woman#39;s chances for a good m
