the call of the wild is london’s most-read book, and generally considered his best, the most masterpiece of his so-called “early period”。 the story was set in 19th-century klondike gold rush, in which sled dogs were bought at generous prices.
buck was a domestic dog in judge miller’s home and living a comfortable life until he was sold secretly by the poor gardener and became a sled dog. buck was a bernard dog weighed one hundred and forty pounds, tall, strong, and hea一vy muscled. he couldn’t accommodate to the harsh condition at first. and he wanted to fight, to escape, to go back to his cozy home, but in vain.
the man in red taught him the law of stick and club—one must first adjust himself to his surroundings and learn the rules, and only after that he can do what he wants to do. the club of the man in red called back buck’s nature as a dog.
when he firstly served for fran?ois and perrault, two couriers, he showed his superior ability to adapt to the environment and his smartness to learn everything he wanted to learn. curly’s death astonished him and taught him to be cautious. and before he had recovered from the shock caused by the tragic passing of curly, he was harnessed as a sled dog and step by step wanted to be the leader. but the leading dog, spitz, was already an excellent one, who also considered buck as enemy and potential competitor. at last, when spitz once punished him, hurling backward buck, he knew the time had come. he killed spitz and took his place.
when they pulled into dawson, buck was sold as useless thing to three gold diggers, who weren’t veteran in sledding and even didn’t know how to get to their destination. food was eaten up half way. so charles, one of the three, decided to kill buck when he couldn’t get up. however, when he aimed at buck, john thornton sprang upon him, knocked him down and told him that if charles stroke buck, thornton would kill him.
thus, thornton took buck away. he was the only true friend of buck. but buck was a thing of the wild, especially when the calling of wolf from the hills. once when he came back from hills, he found that thornton was killed by indians. what would you do if you were buck when your beloved friend was killed? buck became a nut and killed those headsmen and stayed with thornton for two days and nights, never lea一ving thornton out of his sight. and then a nearby wolf howl captures his ears, and he follows the sound to an approaching wolf pack, battling several of these creatures to prove his worth.
sometimes we choose life, but this life belongs to others. if we once did it,we would be terrible grown-ups——mixing everything up together, confusing everything, and all day just say that“i’m busy with matters of consequence. ” i don’t want to be that kind of person!why not choose life of my own?
every time i’m reading the story, the idea becomes more and more strong. nothing is meaningful unless you put your love in it.
the little prince lives in the planet b-612 that isn’t any larger than a house. his life is simply with joy. one day,a beautiful angel was born among the simple flower that had only one rings of petals. she was totally a miracle at the sunrise. to the little prince, she was a very complex creature. he couldn’t help falling in love with the flower. but,as he said,he was too young to know how to love her. she always pretended to be proud to conceal her love. then he went away from his planet to search for something he needed. she didn’t blame him or urge him to stay. actually she wanted him to be happy. so she chose not to cry and let him go.
during his trip on the earth,he met the fox. at that time, the little prince was looking for men. but the fox beg of him to tame her because she used to live a monotonous life and wanted to have a friend. so,since then, the little prince sat a little closer to her day by day. thus, the little prince tamed the fox.
but the departure was coming. hadn’t it helped her in any way?yeah,it did help her. to each other, they had been unique in the world instead of other thousands of ordinary little boys and foxes!and to the fox,she owned the color of the wheatfield to remind her of the happiness with the little prince.
everything changed from the very beginning. and at last, the fox told the little prince her secret:
“it’s only with one’s heart that one can see clearly.
what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
then he understood,it was the time he spent on his flower which made his flower so important.
we may be one of these characters in the book. the flower, the fox,or the little prince. i mean that love and departure, misunderstanding and suddenly realizing are equally valuable.
when loving someone,we should be brave enough. try to make him happy even if so many tears have been added up to a deep sea.
when someone tames you,the world will be a fantastic wonderland. all other people are just alike, but only he is so unique. because of those moments of truth, you can see the spirit in this love. nothing can ever replace it.
it’s a story about life and love. furthermore, the little prince makes me understand the sweetness in sadness
with so many famous masterpieces on the booklist, it is really a pretty hard job to chooseone to read first. after much hesitation and deeply thought, i finally decided to borrowgreat expectations from the small library.
great expectations is about love, family, and rejection as pip and miss havisham have bothbeen rejected in certain ways. pip is a boy around 13 years old, easy to fright, and goesthrough his life suffering lots of sadness. he is in love with a girl named estella and wantsher to find his love, but for him being shy and not showing himself to her, it makes it veryhard for him.
great expectations was the penultimate novel pleted by the most popular novelist ofvictorian england, charles dickens. born in kent, england, in 1812 to a family of modestmeans but great pretensions, dickens’s early life was marked by both humiliation andambition. dickens never forgot the period of financial crisis during his childhood, whenfollowing his father’s bankruptcy, he was taken out of school and forced to work in ashoepolish warehouse.
pip meets an escaped convict, magwitch, and gives him food, in an encounter that is tohaunt both their lives.when pip receives riches from a mysterious benefactor he snobbishly abandons his friendsfor london society and his“great expectations”.
i set up my mind to select it for the reason that i have read a brief introduction of thismasterpiece in my high school english textbook before. in addition, a tale of two citieswhich is also written by charles dickens, the outstanding and special english writer, left mea wonderful and deep impression, when i finished reading the marvelous story.
of course, great expectations didn’t let me down, either. what’s more, the whole structureof the novel is well and elaborately designed. the plot is extremely attractive and full ofunexpected twists. quite a few characters have a distinguishable personality. moreover, thosewords and sentences are so beautiful and meaningful that i even took them down carefully inmy notebook. by reading them no less than three times, i have learned not only some newphrases and sentences, but also a philosophy of life.
among the characters, which impressed me most are not pip and estella who should be regardedas the leading roles, but joe and magwitch. i feel awfully sorry that i was not brave enoughto read the original edition that is as thick as a brick. otherwise, i may appreciate joe andmagwitch more.
yes, they are not the main characters in the novel. however, what they saidand what they did deeply touched me. it’s interesting, isn’t it? they are quite theopposite guys. one is a totally good man without the least bit of wickedness while the otheris a prisoner who is believed to have mitted every evil.
i believe that everyone who reads the book is to like joe. when he talked about his heavydrinking father who hit him a lot, he said he had a lot of love. faced with his rude wife, hewould rather seem a bit weak or foolish than stand up to her and fight for himself. knowingpeacockish pip was ashamed of his uneducated manners, he left sadly and quietly. the worldrushes on over the strings of the lingering heart making the music of sadness. but when hewas informed of pip’s illness, he immediately came to take good care of pip.
he is alwayscontributing everything and requiring nothing. such a man is joe, kind, tolerant andselfless. "nothing is so mild and gentle as courage, nothing so cruel and pitiless ascowardice," says a wise author.
however, why do i appreciate magwitch, the bad guy? you may wonder. indeed, magwitch did alot of evil things when he was young. but how can you be unmoved when you get to know thatthe old man kept himself going just by thinking of the boy who once did him a small favor?
he lost his only daughter and pip had no parents, so he considered himself as the boy’ssecond father, making up his mind to help his dear boy became a gentleman. he did every kindof job and led a hard life in australia. at last he made a big fortune and promised himselfthat all the money would go to pip.
he could have led a better life in australia ,but ihechose to go back to london .with the simple intention of seeing pip, he went back at the riskof being hanged! “whatever the fault he had from the start, remember, reader, he had a goodheart.” joe used these words to describe his father. but i think these words can betterdescribe magwitch. he lived with the fear of death all his life. who shuts love out, in turnshall be shut outfrom love. however, thankfully, because pip finally realized his goodheart, his ending was peaceful.
dickens has pip as the writer and first person narrator of this account of his life'sexperiences, and the entire story is understood to have been written as a retrospective, rather than as a present tense narrative or a diary or journal. still, though pip "knows" howall the events in the story will turn out,he uses only very subtle foreshadowing so that welearn of events only when the pip in the story does. pip does, however, use the perspectiveof the bitter lessons he's learned to ment acidly on various actions and attitudes in hisearlier life.
i know how to fully understand this novel, twice is far from enough. pip, estella, misshavisham, biddy even mr wemmick, every single character has a story that is well worth myattention. i love this novel so much that i am determined to read the original edition oneday. believe me. but before that day es,i will see the movie great expectations first.
search for knowledge, read more, sit on your front porch and admire the view without payingattention to your needs.
the author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in london. the hero of this novel was oliver twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. he suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse.
while reading the tragic experiences of the little oliver, i was shocked by his sufferings. i felt for the poor boy, but at the same time i detested the evil fagin and the brutal bill. to my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and oliver lived a happy life in the end.
one of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of mrs. maylie and rose and began a new life. he went for walks with them, or rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. he felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. how can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? the reason is the nature of goodness.
i think it is the most important information implied in the novel by dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. although i don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet i do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

the first impression that the boy tom gave me was a naughty, mischievous boy, just as what aunt polly said. he never lacked the curiosity to explore new places, sometimes even risking his life, which i did not dare to! there were some great adventures of him with huck or joe. huck was an orphan, and joe was tom’s classmate. everybody in the small village knew tom, mainly for tom’s—you know kind of gallantry!
i should tell you the adventures. the origin of the attempt was that tom and huck was getting curious to the world of outside, and they made an effort to run-away. however, when they were in the graveyard, some people appeared. they were injun joe, huck’s father, named potter, and a doctor. tom and huck quickly hid behind the bush, and they saw them digging the coffins out, probably finding something valuable. they did not realize that what they witnessed was a murder! tom and huck were extremely afraid, and they ran away rapidly. on the court, potter was being accused of the murderer; however, tom declared that it was injun joe who used potter’s knife to kill the young doctor. on hearing this, injun joe broke the glass and ran away! this scared everybody, and tom’s brother, sid, said that he always heard tom mumbling something when he was asleep, and sometimes even shouting. indeed, the accident was fluttering everybody in the town with fear.
before, tom once fell in love with a girl called lawrence. and he showed off in front of the girl, trying to win the girl’s heart, but lawrence ignored tom’s appearance, and it made tom sad. at present, tom went for another girl for becky. yet, when becky knew that tom once loved lawrence (it was probably childish thoughts), she refused tom. tom got so depressed that he resolutely committed the second escape.
he made contact with huck and joe that afternoon, about where to meet, the code words of meeting, and the route, and so on and so forth. each of them brought some food, and huck brought some pipes (remind that huck had no real home, and i had no ideas where he got the things). at midnight, they met at the place, and they took a raft down the river. after drifting for about several hours, they finally reached the destiny. there they lived for about several weeks, and while everybody thought they were drowned, they had a great time. they were no problems of food or water shortages. they promised to be a pirate, and would live there forever.
if you were out from your relatives for a long time, wouldn’t you miss home? it was the same for those children. after several weeks, joe felt that he missed home very much, and tom could not seem to stop him. on this, tom brought joe and huck his secret—
on one night, when the rest of the boys fell asleep (of course they slept outside), tom crept from the camp, and headed toward the town. he sneaked to his aunt’s room, and hid under the bed, while everybody- mary (tom’s sister), sid, aunt polly and joe harper’s mother were having a meeting. there were a lot of tears, about how the boys were killed, and how they would treat the boys if they ever lived again, such things. tom almost wanted to get out of the bed and hug aunt polly, but he couldn’t. at last, everybody went to sleep. tom went out from the bed, and flew to the camp. that was the secret— that the boys will go to their own funeral!
while the boys were outside, all of the people in the town were discussing about the accidents. the town was immediately covered with a sense of doom. so the funeral was raised. everybody wore a black suit, and they prayed something along with the priest. just then, they saw somebody entering the gate, and what they saw was unbelievable. three young souls came out from their coffins and showed up in front of everybody! the change of the atmosphere was imaginable. aunt polly, joe harper’s mother, mary and sid were astounded to find that tom came so vivid in front of them, and so tom and joe became a hero in the school, even in the town.
the real adventures of tom were finding the treasures.
the woman pays
tess is really a tragic figure in the book tess of the d’urberwilles.
she was seduced by a so-called gentleman—alec, and from then on her life totally changed from this loss of innocence. people looked down on her and respected her no more. actually she did nothing wrong because before she was seduced she knew nothing of men. she was just a girl when she first met that terrible man.
she was forced by the gossips and the church to blame herself for this accident, so she thought she deserved nothing good. in order to get rid of the past she decided to go to a distant dairy farm but was still saying to herself that she was wrong. maybe god didn’t agree with that, because the lord gave her someone she loved with her whole heart and life—angel chare. angel popped the question to her but she refused him without saying why. she said she loved him deeply and perhaps no one in the world could love him more than she did but she could not marry him for some unspoken reason. angel wasn’t satisfied with this vague answer and did his best to win tess. somehow she agreed and they soon fixed the wedding day. soon after their wedding angel confessed the crime he committed to a woman long time ago and asked for tess’s forgiveness. tess was not at all angry and forgave angel at once; in fact she was rather happy and excited for she also had things to confess.
she sat and told everything to angel, hoping he would forgive her as he was forgiven but she was wrong. she was not forgiven, not as she thought she was. the woman pays.
without angel’s love, nothing meant anything to her. the result wasn’t important now. tess was arrested for her murder of that so-called gentleman. why? she still loved angel and when he finally went back to her and asked for her forgiveness, after he regretted what he had done unfair to tess, she was desperate. that was too late—alec had always told tess that angel would never come back so he won tess’s trust. unluckily angel did come back and found tess.! everything was too late!
tess was deceived and she lost angel for the second time! the strengh of her love was so strong that she had forgotten the difference between right and wrong. before that she had done nothing wrong but when she killed alec, everything really changed! she became a criminal! how could it be? she was as pure and innocent as the good wife in the bible. her whole character was honest and faithful. angel figured out at last that a person should be judged not only on what he has done but also on what he wanted to do!
tess didn’t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defend herself so she lost her innocence and that’s all! angel also did the wrong thing and it was even more serious than tess’s crime but he was not blamed for it. why it is always the woman who pays? why they are always hurt? why was tess’s girlish purity lost? why does the wrong man take the wrong woman? why do the bad often ruin the good? why is beauty damaged by ugliness? women are too weak! thousands of years of history have shown us that women have always been treated unfairly!
in old china there was a culture, which didn’t think of women as human beings. if you asked one if he was the oldest in his family, he would probably answer “the oldest one” even if he had some elder sisters. if you asked why then he would say, “ha, they are not included!”
people gave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep the family name going. they thought girls had no use for the family. they would be married and go to live with their husbands’ home and be their wives some day sooner or later. so they were extremely hard on girls.
girls should be hard working, faithful, loyal, intelligent, and virtuous and the most important thing was she must be a maiden! if her husband was the first man who touched her then she was a good girl, a good wife no matter how she thought. if she wasn’t, then she would gain a very bad reputation and nobody would dare to go near her. what about men? people did not care whether he was an experienced man or not, nor did they care about his character. they thought man equals power and power equals rights…
now let’s not be so bitter. nowadays women’s situations have become much better. some are because of the change of society and some are because of civilization. just let those poor painful women like tess be just a memory.
